Frida (1907 – 1954) was a Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self-portraits, and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico. Inspired by the country'southward pop culture, she used a folk art style to explore questions of identity, gender, class, and race in Mexican society. Her paintings often had strong autobiographical elements and mixed realism with fantasy.

Students that are learning more near Frida can accept some guidance in drawing her likeness. Her self-portraits often shared her honey of flowers, bright colors, and of course, trademark eyebrows.

Drawing Tip: To get the deep, rich color shown in this sample, attempt drawing Frida with a pencil on black paper so tracing those lines with a blackness oil pastel. After her peel and hair are colored in (also with pastels) trace the lines again with the black pastel. Thick black lines ever make a drawing look more dramatic and interesting.
